Unlike traditional braces that use metal brackets that are tightened often, Invisalign uses clear hard plastic aligners that are custom-molded to your mouth. These clear aligners are worn for the duration of the shift in the alignment of your teeth to occur then swapped out for a different one. While every patient is different and their teeth will realign at a different speed, most patients will swap out for a new Invisalign aligner approximately every two weeks and until the entire procedure is complete.
The procedure will begin with X-rays that are taken as well as digital images and impressions of your teeth. This information is then used to plan the procedure. We will then be able to do generate a virtual representation of none only the state of your teeth but what how the process will evolve the patients smile over time. Every patient’s case will be different but in general, will take approximately about a year for patients. Once you receive your aligners and an individual plan has been completed, you will begin to wear your aligners. The aligners are worn throughout the day and are taken out only to eat or when you brush your teeth. Invisalign aligners are made of comfortable plastic that will not irritate the inside of your mouth and as a matter of fact most people will not even know that you are wearing them.
As mentioned earlier, your aligners will be changed every two weeks. This change is done by visiting us here at Dr. Jeevan Ghatnekar, DDS, where we will be able to see how the procedure is coming along. Check-ups themselves do not have to necessarily happen every time you come and pick up your new aligners but we do recommend coming in for a check up about every six weeks. As far as the aligners are concerned you should wear them for between 20-22 hours a day and yes that includes during sleep.
